Therapeutic Mentor 

POSITION: 2-5 Hours per week per client, multi client caseload available, Part to Full time potentially available. 

HOURS/EXPECTATION: Variable/Flexible -Long Term

DESCRIPTION/PURPOSE: 

Mentors are employed to provide Therapeutic Mentoring services to Truckee/Tahoe area youth. Mentors meet with clients once a week for a two to four hour session scheduled by the Mentor with the client and their family. Gateway Mountain Center Therapeutic Mentors implement our Innovative Nature-Based Therapeutic Mentoring program. As a Whole Hearts Minds and Bodies clinically-supervised mentor you will be trained in our 4Roots Method and leading edge humanistic, trauma-informed modalities. WHMB Therapeutic Mentors provide a consistent, caring, authentic relationship with the youth through supported risk taking in nature such as kayaking, rock climbing, hiking, and personal reflection. In addition to some of our personal reflection activities which include: art-making, nature journaling, meadow-tating and strength-based confidence building. WHMB Therapeutic Mentors provide the container, support, connection and opportunities for young people to thrive. Our program is a unique, powerful and flexible option within the field of therapeutic services. Mentors generally pick up clients from home or school, spend some time together in nature, can share a bite to eat, and drop the client off at home. 

OTHER REQUIREMENTS: 

  • Session documentation which requires therapeutic notes for each session written in a timely manner. 
  • Completion of forms for County compliance, assessments and research purposes. 
  • Twice a month meetings with a clinical supervisor. 
  • Once a month meetings with the case manager. 
  • Continued learning and development around therapeutic mentoring. Gateway Mountain Center offers periodic on site development opportunities.
  • Monthly in person team meetings to support development and resource sharing with the intent of improving Mentor/Mentee relationships, effectiveness and continually improving outcomes.

SKILLS AND QUALIFICATIONS: 

Required: 

  • Advanced CPR and Wilderness First Aid Training (WFA may be completed within 6 mos. of employment). 
  • Excellent people skills, especially with children. 
  • Clean Record: LiveScan/DMV 
  • Access to safe and insured vehicles to transport mentee. 
  • Access to a computer and a printer. 
  • Covid Vaccination or Waiver with weekly negative test submissions may be required.

Preferred

  • Outdoor leadership experience. 
  • Experience in outdoor activities (i.e. skiing, climbing, hiking, mountain biking) 
  • An interest in or knowledge of Natural History/Philosophy 
  • Therapeutic training or Licensing. (LCSW/LMFT) 

Pay: 

  • Starting rate between $20 to $29 per hour depending on experience and education. 
  • 100% Paid Training, 50% reimbursement of hourly pay for any approved non-Gateway training completed. 
  • Transportation Reimbursement- at current IRS mileage reimbursement rate. 
  • Additional pay may be available to bilingual candidates and candidates with Peer Support Certification.
