About Little Gems of the Sierra

Little Gems of the Sierra is a growing 501 C3 Preschool and Child Care center that is expanding! We currently have two locations in the Truckee area, and are excited to be opening a new location to support our local community.  We are hiring teaching staff and a full time cook. The new location will be open 7 days a week from 7:30 AM to 5:30 PM.

GENERAL JOB DESCRIPTION

Assistant Teacher is under direct supervision of Lead teacher and supports the daily routine and rhythm of this teacher.

MAJOR DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Support Lead Teacher in daily routine and Rhythm
  • Attend to children’s basic needs by feeding them, dressing them, and changing their diapers
  • Prepare materials and classrooms for class activities
  • Help children who need one on one time so lead teacher can be with the class
  • Prepare and serve meals and snacks in accordance with nutritional guidelines

MINOR DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Attend professional meetings, educational conferences, and teacher training workshops in order to maintain and improve professional competence.
  • Attend staff meetings, and serve on committees as required
  • Meet with other professionals to discuss individual students’ needs and progress
  • Follow ques and tasks of Lead teacher
  • Organize and label materials, and display students’ work in a manner appropriate for their ages and perceptual skills

QUALIFICATIONS FOR THE JOB

Prior to employment, a teacher shall meet the requirements of item 1 or 2 below: 

  1. A teacher shall have completed, with passing grades, at least six postsecondary semester or equivalent quarter units of the education requirement specified in (3)(a) below; or shall have obtained a Child Development Assistant Permit issued by the California Commission on Teacher Credentialing.
    1. After employment, a teacher hired under (1) above shall complete, with passing grades, at least two units each semester or quarter until the education requirement specified in (3)(a) below is met.
  1. A teacher shall meet the requirements of Health and Safety Code Section 1597.055.
    1. Health and Safety Code Section 1597.055 states in pertinent part:
      1. Notwithstanding any other educational requirements, a person may be hired as a teacher in a day care center if he or she satisfies all of the following conditions:
        1. Is 18 years of age or older.
        2. Possesses a regional occupation program certificate of training in childcare occupations issued by a regional occupational program which is accredited by the Western Association of Schools and Colleges.
        3. Has completed at least 95 hours of classroom instruction in childcare and development and childcare occupations and at least 150 hours in supervised field experience in a licensed day care center or comparable group childcare program.

Reference info for item (1)(a) above:

  1. To be a fully qualified teacher, a teacher shall have one of the following:
    1. Twelve postsecondary semester or equivalent quarter units in early childhood education or child development completed, with passing grades, at an accredited or approved college or university; and at least six months of work experience in a licensed childcare center or comparable group childcare program.
      1. The units specified in (3)(a) above shall include courses that cover the general areas of child growth and development, or human growth and development; child, family and community, or child and family; and program/curriculum.
      2. Experience shall be verified as having been performed satisfactorily, at least three hours per day for a minimum of 50 days in a six-month period, as a paid or volunteer staff member under the supervision of a person who would qualify as a teacher or director under this chapter.

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:

  • Must be at least 18 years of age
  • Current CPR/First Aid certification – 8 hours of EMSA certified CPR/First Aid
  • At least six months of experience working in a licensed childcare center
  • Mandated Reporter Training certificate
  • Pass a Live Scan Background check

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS

  • Must be able to lift a minimum of 20 pounds.
  • Must be in good physical health and pass a TB test.
  • Must comply with California State immunization laws – Minimum immunization record to include measles, pertussis, current influenza vaccination between Aug 1 and Dec 1 of each year
